The world is quite busy with people rushing to and fro, from place to place, work to home, home to school, morning, noon, and night. It can be an exhausting place sometimes, and one day you might find yourself sitting in a chair, bushed, feeling something like the skin of a drumhead, stretched to tight and too far. While a lot of people flocked to the espresso culture simply because the product tasted so good, more people embraced it because it was a way of bringing the Old World, or at least the relaxed culture of many Europeans into their homes and cafés. A cup of good espresso with a thick head was an indicator to slow down. Quick, early morning coffee is used by most as a wake-up method before the rush. Espresso is different. It is a drink meant to be savored, meant to be enjoyed in the quiet of the day, meant to be enjoyed with a bit of biscotti with friends or family to laugh and joke with. Espresso means a time to stop and indulge.
Creating espresso that will make you lick your lips in anticipation is the goal of Rancilio espresso machines, especially as you watch a bit of milk churn in a soft wave through the darker liquid. With a motto like “coffeeing the world,” how could you expect anything less?
Rancilio History
Roots, research, relationships, and results. These are the four principles that the company bases its mission on for both its Rancilio espresso machine as well as its customer service. Keeping a keen focus for over 80 years by the same family that started the company has enabled them to bring all four principles to the forefront, allowing consumers to reap the benefits.
Spotting new opportunities on the horizon, Roberto Rancilio founds his business, the Officine meccaniche RR, in 1927 and immediately begins producing Rancilio espresso machines. Like other Italian espresso makers of the time, for the most part pieces are made by hand, which allow for quality and careful craftsmanship in each item, something that people treasure and which gives them peace of mind knowing they’ve bought a solid item. From there, the business grew steadily. Throughout the decades, the company slowly but surely expanded out, increasing production every time to meet the mounting demand. Though World War II brought a slower pace to the business, it was able to recover as quickly as possible and did everything it could help bring people a taste of normalcy through a cup of fine quality espresso.
Production continued to grow, giving the company a more solid foundation than ever before and in 1965 they launched a new model, the Z8 which was designed by Marco Zanuso. People took to the model quickly, giving the company a new boost of both assets and confidence. They remained at a prosperous pace for nearly another ten years, offering people exactly the products they needed without changing unnecessary components or designs. In 1972 the company grew so big they needed an entirely new space to keep up with production demands. They opened a new facility at Villastanza di Parabiago which is located near Milan. Two years later, with new technology and research proving that there is room for innovations, the Z9 model appeared with such appreciative reception that the company found itself becoming one of the leaders of espresso machines. They now have an international market and with good management and sound decision-making, in 1975 they obtain the patent for a Rancilio espresso machine that utilizes electronic operation control.
By then there was no stopping the company and other competitors realized that they had yet another skilled and smart vendor to contend with, and Rancilio was not going to back down. In 1981 the headquarters expanded and realizing that home users were now very interested in creation espresso in their kitchens, they launched an entire line of machines specifically made for the demographic. Delighted, products are gobbled up by eager consumers and the company expands even more when sales jump. They opened an office in Australia to showcase items in the Far East region and in 1999 they begin to fully tap the United States market by officially opening a branch company. Another branch company appears in Barcelona in 2003. Throughout the rest of the time, they continue to make newer and better than before espresso machines, obtaining Ergo Swiss Coffee Systems in 2006 to bring in even more models and ideas to the fold.
